Law Ride® 2009 | |
Law Ride® is held each year in Washington, DC, on the Sunday before National Police Week. It's also usually Mother's Day. Motor Officers from across the country arrive at a parking lot at RFK Stadium starting about 9:00am. Precisely at 11:00am, the motor officers depart, with supporters from the Blue Knights (a motorcycle club composed of law enforcement personnel) and other bikers follow. They ride in procession to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial at 5th & F Streets, N.W. A ceremony and wreath-laying is held to honor officers who have died in the line of duty in the last year. |

Various events are staged, including tight turns and weaves, the longest time to ride for a certain distance, and stopping on a dime. The Mid-Atlantic Police Motorcycle Competition is held in various locations in the Washington, DC, Metro area. More information is here. |
Blue Mass 2008 | |
The Blue Mass is held at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Washington, DC, usually on the first or second Tuesday of May. It is held to remember and pray for those in law enforcement who have died in the line of duty in the last year. The mass is led by the Archbishop of Washington and several other priests from local parishes. It is attended by city, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies in the Washington Metro area, as well as by individuals who wish to express their prayers for fallen officers. Bag pipers from a local law enforcement group lead the procession, followed by honor guards from more than a dozen agencies, then top leaders from local agencies follow. |

National Motorcycle Police Rodeo | |
A "rodeo" is another name for a police motorcycle competition. The National Police Motorcycle Rodeo is not well-advertised. I happened to discover the event going on August 12 - 14, 2006, by walking by it while on a lunch stroll. |
