A Sam Browne Belt is a wide leather belt which is supported by a strap going diagonally over the right shoulder. It is most often seen as part of a military or police uniform. These belts are not often worn today due to concerns about safety -- a bad guy could grab the shoulder strap and throw an officer off balance. These days, only a few law enforcement agencies have uniforms that use these belts: the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the New Jersey State Police duty uniform, and some American state police forces in their full-dress formal uniforms.
A Sam Browne Belt is sometimes worn by "Old Guard Leathermen" with formal leatherwear. I have had several of these belts for many years, and still wear them from time to time. I just like they way it looks. The shoulder strap is connected to a D-ring on the belt, and crosses the body diagonally over either shoulder.
